This documentary photography project began as me exploring the social and economic aspects surrounding death. Exploring how the visualization of death could give insight on the deceased’s status and role in society but also how much they are thought of today. Acknowledging the role they play and the space they take up despite not existing in the world of the living. However, while exploring this topic, I started to pay attention to how my own family responds to death, with it being a taboo topic and not to be touched. While exploring this aspect of my family I started to draw further connections to this concept of “home.” When spending time in rural North Florida alongside the other half of my family I began to realize what my life could have been like if I did not move to the city when I was younger. This experience of being home but not inspired a feeling of unehrlich within me.
Together these images combine to tell a story of family, loss, and what could have been. Through my own personal exploration of my life through photography I hope to uncover a deeper understanding of my own self.
